Walkways of straw define the areas of earth suitable for the fall of foot from those areas reserved for untrammeled growth. A precondition of any progress is the setting aside of areas that operate distinctly. Meaningful contrasts are the stuff of expression. Gardening is an act of expression, like that of writing, and in both I look to contrive contrasts. A nearby spigot that descends to the water in the earth allows for short trips back and forth, with an empty can and a full can alternatively. The master gardener encourages and praises the plants, fitting new seeds to the plan or transferring plants to the soil’s ready place made with a trowel. She mourns the mustard ruined already by the heat. Pulling it from the earth, soil falls away from its dead extents. Portions of the plant are scattered about in order to complete its return.
