On Unpleasantness, a Passage -- by Alex Ranieri

On Unpleasantness, a Passage -- by Alex Ranieri

Anyone may be drunk at night, and wake up at dawn hungover; so, too, with unpleasant thoughts. For any manner of misgivings and doubts may prey on us, and appear to our vulnerable and child-like selves of the dark as truth, which, in the more friendly and courageous light of day, reveal themselves as mere nonsense. It is only when we cannot shake off our drunkenness; when, as an alcoholic is pursued even through sunlight by the shakes, we are pursued likewise by the same doubts and misgivings with which we closed our eyes, that we ought to take notice; to realize that at some point we have taken a wrong turn from our nature, and that this nature owns us, and demands to be owned in turn.
